Rain was written by Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy, the two longest-serving members of Gothic rockers The Cult, a group that has had many changes in personnel since its foundation. Astbury formed Southern Death Cult in Bradford in 1981, but this “positive punk” group lasted for just one single and a compilation album of largely live performances before morphing into Death Cult, which is where Duffy came in. Death Cult, comprising various former members of other alternative rock groups, made their live debut in 1983 and issued an EP and a single by the end of the year. The band was re-named The Cult at the beginning of 1984, in time for an appearance on Channel 4’s ‘The Tube’. Later that year, their single Spiritwalker became a major hit on the independent charts and they entered the studio to cut an album. But it was when they moved to London in 1985 to make their second LP that mainstream success began for them. The single She Sells Sanctuary (featuring Mark Brzezicki from Big Country) was a Top 20 hit and the album Love, recorded over the summer of 1985, went to #4 on release. Rain, the second single from the album, shares a chord progression with She Sells Sanctuary and also made the Top 20.
