I Don’t Want To Be A Hero was one of four Top 20 singles for Johnny Hates Jazz in a twelve-month period beginning in the early spring of 1987. The first, Shattered Dreams, became the breakthrough hit that Clark Datchler had been waiting several years for when it made #5 for three consecutive weeks. The group’s next three singles all made the Top 20 and the album they were taken from, Turn Back The Clock, debuted at #1 for the week ending 23 January 1988.

But despite this success, Datchler quit after the group’s sixth single, Don’t Say It’s Love, another cut from the album. He went off to resume his solo career, while the remaining members of Johnny Hates Jazz hired previous collaborator Phil Thornalley to front the group. Datchler’s solo album flopped, as did the Johnny Hates Jazz album recorded without him.
