Released today in 1984: Cry And Be Free

Marilyn’s inspiration for the lyrics of the gospel-influenced Cry And Be Free (with its vocals arranged by, and prominently featuring, Claudia Fontaine of Afrodiziak, credited on her contributions to by singles as ‘Miss Claudia’), was Thompson Twins’s Tom Bailey. Smash Hits asked Bailey what he thought of the tribute in the 1985 Yearbook: “I was quite pleased,” he said. “I thought it was all right, that song. I don’t know if Marilyn knows me that well but he’s got a point. If men have a characteristic trait it’s that they learn early on not to be freely emotional.”

Not everyone thought the song was “all right”, though. The week it is released it’s Morrissey reviewing the singles for Record Mirror. “If that record is a hit then I’m Catherine of Aragon,” he says, before declaring “Frisbee!” and slinging the record out the nearest open window.
