Today in 1987

Die-cut 7" sleeveAs no release from a Smash Hits cover star was planned for 17 January in any year of the 1980s, today we look at the chart for the week ending 17 January 1987 to find out how the artists featured on If You Were There were faring. Although a good number of the relevant artists have only singles on their way down following their Christmas chart peaks, Swing Out Sister have thought of that: they have two hits in the Top 40 – Surrender moves up the chart from its debut position of #38 the week before, and previous single Breakout replaces it at that position this week.

Elsewhere, there’s a good showing for last week’s releases (see the previous entries in this blog for the 5th and 9th of January) with several new entries, the highest of which is The Style Council at #15.
